What does a flashing opener light mean?

On many LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, a light that flashes ten times after the door reverses points to the safety sensors. Newer models blink a two-part code on the motor unit's arrows: codes starting with 1 relate to sensors and their wiring, and codes starting with 4 usually mean the door reversed against resistance. Your manual lists the rest for your model.

LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers are made by the same company and share much of their electronics. Many of their models tell you what is wrong by blinking a light. Learning to read those blinks can save you a service call, or at least help you describe the problem when you call.

Ten flashes of the light

On many models, if the door starts to close and then reverses, the opener's light bulb flashes about ten times. That almost always points to the safety sensors. One of them is out of line, dirty, blocked or not getting power. In Punta Gorda, fogged lenses, spider webs and wasp nests are common causes.

What to try: wipe both lenses with a soft cloth, clear anything blocking the path, and check that the small indicator lights on both sensors glow steady. A blinking or dark light on one sensor usually means it needs aligning or its wire is damaged.

Two-number codes on newer models

Many newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers have up and down arrow buttons or LEDs on the motor unit. When there is a fault, the up arrow flashes a number of times, then the down arrow flashes a number of times. Together they make a two-part code, such as 1 and 4.

Codes that start with 1 relate to the safety sensors and their wiring. They point to a sensor that is misaligned, blocked, unplugged or shorted.

Codes that start with 4 usually mean the door reversed because it met resistance or hit its force limit. That can be something in the way, a door that is out of balance, or a broken spring making the door too heavy.

Other code groups point to the motor, the travel limits or the circuit board. Your owner's manual or the label on the motor unit lists what each code means for your model.

A blinking wall control

Some wall controls have a lock feature. When it is on, the remotes stop working and the wall control light may blink. Press and hold the lock button to turn it off.

When the code points to the board

In Southwest Florida, lightning surges damage a lot of opener logic boards. If the opener shows a board fault or does nothing at all after a storm, the board or the whole unit may need replacing. A surge protector helps prevent a repeat.

When to call

If the code points to sensors and cleaning does not fix it, or if it points to the motor, the board or a force problem you cannot explain, call (941) 948-2166. In our posted price ranges, an opener diagnosis with a minor fix comes to $110 to $275. Do not keep running an opener that reverses on a door that feels heavy. That is often a broken spring, and running the opener can damage it.
